[iPhone 5 / iPad Mini] New iPad Mini to Debut in October, After Latest Apple iPhone's September Bow

Image
Apple’s next generation iPhone and its so-called “iPad mini” will debut at two separate events this fall, rather than a single one as has been widely speculated, according to several sources. First comes the latest iteration of the tech giant’s hugely popular smartphone, which will be unveiled at an as yet unannounced event on September 12. Only after the next-generation iPhone is out the door and on sale will Apple announce the smaller iPad it’s been working on. That device, which is expected to have a display of less than eight inches, will be uncrated at a second special event, which sources said is currently scheduled for October. Some have already speculated that Apple would likely separate these two iOS device announcements, particularly since both are likely to be blockbuster events. Daring Fireball’s John Gruber recently posited that reports suggesting Apple would debut the new iPhone and iPad mini at a single event were off-base. His theory: The

[iPhone] Apple iPhone 5 – Everything we know so far

Image
L ast year Apple took everyone by surprise when it christened the newest ‘i’ device iPhone 4S rather than what was expected by all - iPhone 5. While iPhone 4S was a pleasant upgrade and introduced us to some smashing featurea such as Siri, it didn’t undergo any visual changes from the iPhone 4. The iPhone 5 is special as it is said to be Steve Job’s most ambitious project . We can expect a complete overhaul of the iPhone with this new device that is all set to enter the Apple portfolio officially. While like its ancestry, the iPho ne 5 has enjoyed the limelight way before its release, the rumored release date is toggling between three months – August, September and October. We have gathered all the rumours and speculations, and put these tidbits together to bring to you what we know about the iPhone 5 so far. [Tablets] Predicting how tablets will evolve by 2015

Image
Tablets have finally made it through the struggles of childhood and are now entering their rambunctious teenage years. We’ve weeded out the “me too” products and are left with three major players in the tablet market: Apple, Google, and a resurgent Microsoft. The products from the former two are reaching a state of maturity, where they can reliably serve enterprise computing functions, while Microsoft is gearing up for a major push into the market it once owned. With the market maturing, how might tablets evolve and be serving the enterprise in the coming three years? Personalized, schizophrenic Just as mobile phones and laptops have increasingly become tools of personal expression, tablets have continued the trend. This has created a difficult task for CIOs, who are now asked to allow any and all devices into the corporate network while simultaneously maintaining security. I believe users will win out in terms of bringing their personal tablets to work, but we’ll in

[Adobe Flash Player] Adobe Pulls Flash Player From Google Store

Image
Adobe ’s capitulation on mobile Flash , which began last year with the announcement it would be scrapping further mobile Flash Player development, got real today with the official abandonment of the player on Google’s Android mobile OS. Early this morning, Adobe dropped the Flash Player browser plugin from the Google Play store. While pre-Jelly Bean versions of Android can continue to run Flash if it’s installed, and Jelly Bean devices can install it via workaround, Adobe recommends against doing so, as it doesn’t plan to offer security updates and bug fixes for existing versions of Flash for Android after September 2013, and attempting to run the plugin on Jelly Bean may result in “unpredictable behavior.” The removal of Flash from Google Play comes as Adobe refocuses its mobile video efforts around HTML5 , something the late Apple CEO Steve Jobs suggested it do years ago. “New open standards created in the mobile era, such as HTML5 , w

[Android] Signing certificates for clients in Android

Image
Signing certificates for Android apps are a seemingly simple thing, but it can get a little more complicated when you develop apps for a client. If you’re not familiar with signing, you may want to read Google’s instructions on signing Android apps . Read on for a few things to look out for when you build apps for a client. Why signing keys are important First, the obligatory reminder: Back up your keystore–without it, you can never update an app on Google Play again. You would need to create a new app and start over. This is because once an app is released to Google Play, all future updates must be signed with the exact same signing certificate. No exceptions, no excuses. Now, backing up your keystore may be easy when you’re developing apps for yourself, but what about when you’re building apps for a client? What if you have a very large number of clients, each with a different certificate? The same rules apply

[SmartPhones] Mobile computing and the demise of the desktop

Image
Apple’s earnings, which were recently released, had an interesting subtext beneath numbers that generally disappointed investors. As Apple’s flagship iPhone and iPad sales had another brisk quarter, Macintosh sales slowed, and desktops fell 13%. With the iPad eclipsing overall Mac sales, is the tablet finally poised to banish the desktop to the annals of technology history? The dawn of the specialized processor One of the major factors that might spell the end of the desktop as we know it has been the rise of specialized processors. In the traditional end-user computing market, upgrading processing power was largely a question of adding more transistors. Need more number crunching, video processing, or data manipulation power? Add more transistors. Computer graphics largely led the transition of specialized processors in the end-user space, with everyone from gamers to graphics professionals quickly discovering that a commodity video expansion card, optimized for mo

[iPhone Tutorial] Create your own iPhone Stopwatch App

Image
Let’s take our existing Clock App we created during our previous tutorials and turn it into a stopwatch. It will look similar to the standard iPhone Clock implementation. Open the ViewController.xib file and move rgw label closer to the top to make a little room for a Start/Stop button at the bottom. Now drag a new button over, change the text to “START”, and size it so it is about the width of the label. Switch to the Sizing inspector and change the Autosizing to stick to the bottom edge of the view. The button and Autosizing should look like Figure A . Figure A Bring up the assistant editor as you did in the previous article so that an action can be added when the button gets tapped. Draw a connection by holding down the control key while dragging from the button to below the label property and release. This time you need to change the connection type to Action, set the name to “onButton” and change the Type to UIButton. Make sure the popup looks like Figure B be

[iPhone Tutorial] Create your own Apple iPhone Clock App

Image
In this post, we will make an iPhone Clock App which displays the current time on the screen. This is a continuation from our first Hello World App. Open up the previous Hello project and I’ll show you how to get programmatic access to the label so that the text can be modified within our ViewController class. In order to do this you will need to connect the label in interface builder to a property of the ViewController class. Say goodbye Open ViewControler.xib and use the toolbar to show the assistant editor. ( Figure A ) Figure A The secondary editor is displayed next to the ViewController interface and should automatically open the header file for the ViewController class. Hold down the control key and then click and drag from the label to inside the view controller header file as shown in Figure B . Figure B Once the arrow reaches inside the interface definition you can let go to receive an Outlet connection popup. Set the name of the control to “l
